Priorities for this site
Submitted by Reto Stauss on 9. February 2009 - 22:36I'm in trouble to decide which entry on the growing to-do list has top priority. For the following reasons I need feedback from you:
- one of the principles I try to follow here is transparency
- Manufaktur in Gründung (MiG) will be much more than my personal mind fuck if I am able to motivate others to join (you for instance)
So please vote:
What are to top priorities for you?
Of course you are welcome to add other important topics.

Some words about the name
Submitted by Reto Stauss on 28. January 2009 - 22:38Perhaps we come closer to the purpose of this plattform if we have a short look at the name. The german word "Manufaktur" (manufactory) points to the goal of the process referenced in the second part ("in Gründung" - in the process of being launched). This is what I understand of manufactory:
- physical goods
- local production in terms of short ways of transportation to markets and from resources
- machine supported production but not or only partialy automated
- low division of labor
- manufacturing of small series to reach a certain level of efficiency but still be flexible enough to customize
- human scale: just as complex (in terms of processes, number of staff, etc.) as the average joe might understand
- craftsmanship is more important than knowing how to program some computer controlled machine
- entrepreneur not manager
In the process of being launched, the second part of the name, makes clear: this is a process. With the goal of having a running manufactory. Which enables people to make a living.
There is some more meaning not represented in the name ... which is or will be explained later in the work journal.

Goal: a toolbox
Submitted by Reto Stauss on 27. January 2009 - 8:43Goal of Manufaktur in Gründung (MiG) is to provide a toolbox including everything needed to found a small production facility:
- Business models for open goods (Open Source products) inclusive pricing und financing of product development
- Ideas and suggestions for products based on appropriate technology
- Entry points to relevant networks
- New concepts describing the relationship between producer and customer
In my understanding MiG is primarily a process to define this toolbox. This includes discoveries of existing things (i believe everything is thought out already!), some original thinking of interested and involved people and of course the synthesis and integration of all this pieces to something new, realizable.

Intention in a few words
Submitted by Reto Stauss on 26. January 2009 - 22:30From the enthusiasm and ingenuity of the Do It Yourself (DIY) movement, fear free handling of (own) intellectual property and the power of collaboration post-industrial locally sourced production facilities emerges producing usefull und sustainable goods.
[BTW: Is there an english analogy to "Manufaktur"? ]
[Update]
1 I guess "Manufaktur" is simply translated as "manufactory". At least according to LEO.

Deutsch only?
Submitted by Reto Stauss on 25. January 2009 - 12:17[First of all: sorry for my bad-hair-day-english. If there is anyone who would like to improve my writing, PLEASE get in touch with me!]
One of the main barriers between global communities is language. This is why I would like to break out from the german speaking habitat and to remove one hurdle through a multilingual plattform. For now it is english and Deutsch.
I have seen folks around the globe who are already working on the things this site explores. Why limit on a minority? Why limit myself? On the other side having all the content multilingual is quite an effort. But as my writing skills improve (at least fluency) this is getting better. Of course this is also a chance to contribute to the site if someone is willing to do some translation work.
